So you want to build a lightweight, portable shelter for your chickens or rabbits? Look no further! Have I got the easy, do it yourself Chicken Run for you!
Here are the supplies you will need:
- 3- rolls of 2' x 10' Hardware Cloth
- 1- 250 count bag of cable ties (75 pound strength)
- 5- 10 foot, 1/2" PVC pipe
- 8- 3 way elbow PVC 1/2" fitting
- 2- 1/2" PVC pipe tee
- 1- set PVC primer/cement
- 1- wire cutter
- 1- hacksaw or pipe cutter
Measure and Cut your PVC pipe into the following lengths:
- 5- 5 foot lengths
- 2- 4 foot lengths
- 4- 2 foot lengths
- 4- 23.5 foot lengths
We cut the 5, 10' lengths as follows:
Cut three of the 10' lengths in half (one of these will be cut smaller)
Cut one of the 10' lengths into 4', 4', 2'
Cut one 10' length into 2', 2', 23.5", 23.5", 23.5"
Cut the extra 5' length into 2' and 23.5"
=49 cut feet (you will have 1' leftover)
Lay out your pieces and loosely put together:
Now, Prime and Cement the fittings together:
We decided to spray paint our run using this green to match the doors on our home. We also painted the zip ties to match.
After you have allowed your paint to dry, start wrapping the sides of your run, securing with zip-ties. We used zip ties approximately 2-3 inches apart.
This is how we turned the corner:
A little helper inside helps poke the zip ties through
We ended up piecing here because the hardware cloth wasn't exactly 10' long and I didn't want to drive all the way in to town to return it.
You will use the wire cutters to trim away any excess and snip off the ends of the zip ties.
Here it is!!
